azahir centers, north lebanon

Azahir creates safe & nurturing environments for at-risk children.

We believe that every child has the right to play, be safe, learn, and grow in a healthy way and with a supportive community. We also believe that young people in marginalized and displaced communities can be agents of change, educators, role models, and peace leaders. To this end we have matched these two beliefs into a program cycle that garners greater community resilience in North Lebanon, including Nahr el Bared Palestinian Refugee Camp and Tel Mayaan village in Akkar.

We train youth to become educators and psycho-social support (PSS) leaders, and they run regular programs of education, PSS, arts, and sports for the children of their community. Our track record has proven the success of Azahir’s model, where children heal, grow, learn and thrive. Learn more!

Azahir is a grassroots organization, our team is entirely made up of Lebanese & Palestinian refugee youth, who are offered a meaningful opportunity to serve their communities.

100%

Retention Rate

In the most recent 2024 Summer Education Program, we had full attendance of Azahir’s children at our center in Nahr el Bared Camp. Zero absences, 100% growth.

Education & Literacy

Education is a right for every child. However, refugee and marginalized children are falling behind in literacy and main subjects. We serve Grades 1 to 9 utilizing the UN curriculum to bring kids up to speed and with regular exams.

Psycho-Social Support (PSS)

PSS and Child Protection are core to our mission – we offer trainings for our youth team and specialized mental health sessions through fun activities such as arts, chess, cinema, dance (dabke!) and more – to engage children in critical thinking and collaboration.

Positive Parenting

Upon our household surveys, Azahir learned that parents value learning methods to support their children living in high-risk & unstable environments. We offer workshops on child development and simple strategies parents can use at home.

Sports for Life-Skills & Coping

Young people living in refugee camps and marginalized communities face limited positive coping strategies to deal with the stress and pressures of their environment. We offer awareness sessions, community-building sports games, and more to help them build skills for their futures.

“Putting a smile on those children’s faces was more powerful than all the bullets in the war.”

~ Tarek, azahir youth leader
